nursery done
The nursery has finally come full circle. Well almost.. I still need to replace the sash cords and refinish the doors, but for all intents & purposes we're calling this one "done". If you recall from another post, I decided against trying to refinish down to the wood in this room (sorry stuccohouse). In it's place is some white trim against a light yellow-tan color (I forget the name). I think it came out looking really good, so at least one bedroom is presentable.

Hey, not a peep out of me. The only reason I'm stripping my wood bare is that the paint is in poor condition, in a bizarre way I like to strip paint, and I have no deadlines to meet. And even then, the bedrooms are going to get repainted. The only time I get distressed is when people post about painting over vintage, virgin stained wood.
The room looks very nice. I noticed that they wrapped the "chair rail" trim around your heating vent (I assume) in your closet.....now that is workman dedication.
Haha ok thanks. I just felt bad for you taking time to explain me all my options and then I go and end up not doing it. Good info though and I'm sure I'll make use of it later down the road.
That closet is kind of weird -- its tiny, but I can't figure out what that piece that juts out is. It looks like a heating vent, but the room on the other side of that wall (bathroom) doesn't have the heating vent in that location. It must be something structural. I never really noticed the "chair rail" in that closet. I'm sure they put that in there to set up some shelving as it literally is only about a foot, maybe a foot & a half wide.
It is probably a chimney for either a stove or furnace. Look in the basement for a foundation. Ducted heat is a relatively new invention - most old furnaces were gravity distribution without ductwork. You can also check the attic for evidence of a chimney. I used the old chimney in my forsquare for cable distribution - electrical, data and tv cable.
If trimwork was stained originally, it is probably hardwood and was meant for stain. Yellow pine and fir was not usually considered "finish" wood and was meant for paint, not stain.
Omar I think your room loks gorgeous! Great job. I like the rug, too.
Thanks decorina! The rug is a little art deco, which I'm always a sucker for.
I was thinking about it a bit more and there is a heating duct just below that location in the living room. Weird that they would extend the duct to the second floor if they weren't going to put another vent in that location in this bedroom.
From what I can tell the forced air ducting system is original to the house. I should get some pics of these heat vents/registers in a post somewhere down the road. The project house has the exact same register as mine (built 1903) so it can't be coincidence. Still haven't checked out my attic. I've been meaning to do that someday..
Oh, I just assumed it was a duct. I have an identical one in one of my closets for my gravity furnace. It runs from the basement up through 1st floor (no register) and up to the attic where there is a hole in the floor for the hot air. It's pretty small to be a chimney which I think would be more likely hidden behind a solid wall (mine if in a kitchen wall).
Yes, there is a chimney stack from the living room fireplace that runs against the wall adjacent to the closet. I've never been in my attic so I couldn't say if there's a hole that the air vents to. Seems kind of strange.. I wonder what the reason would be for that?
I love how sharp that color looks with the white trim! Nice!
Hi dulcie! It's been a while, hope all is well. I'm really happy with how that room came out too.. I'll probably continue the white trim theme upstairs to keep it a little uniform. Well, aside from the master bedroom which is still stained wood.
